This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of World Environment Day, following its creation by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, the day has become one of the world’s largest platforms for raising awareness of the environment. Tens of millions of people participate online and in person in activities, events and actions around the world.
Why participate?
Time is running out and nature is in a state of emergency. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we need to halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. If we don’t act, the exposure to air pollution beyond safety standards will increase by 50% over the decade and plastic waste dumped into aquatic ecosystems will triple by around 2040.
We must act urgently to address these pressing issues.
